The European Parliament adopted a new copyright Directive. Big platforms that make money of uploaded content such as Facebook/Instagram and Google/YouTube will be responsible for all copyright material uploaded by their users. They have to filter the content that will be uploaded. Opponents of the new Directive warn of censorship through this 'upload filters' because they can also stop other content.
The platforms also will need a license before they can link to or use quotes from news articles.
We don’t know when/what changes exactly because now that the law has been approved, it is being sent to European member states that must apply it properly in national legislation. Luckily, that can take a few years!
